Whether you’ve just started learning golf or you’ve been playing for years, one of the most important things to master is distance control. Particularly for golfers just starting out in the game, knowing which club to hit and when is mostly about knowing your own game, and a little about judgment. It’s a skill that’s essential to being a good golfer – and fortunately, one that’s relatively easy to learn.

The first step is to understand a basic concept, and accepting it – Your swing speed, and tempo should be the same for all of your clubs, regardless of how far you need to hit the ball! A lot of beginners find this difficult to begin with, but it really is the key to good distance control and club selection. The club is what does the work, for the longer clubs – there is less loft on the club head, which creates a low and far shot trajectory, and the additional physical length of the club creates greater impact speed. The inverse is true of the shorter clubs.

Once you know this, you can start to integrate it into your game. Next time you’re practicing at the range, take a mid-iron, say a 7 or 8, and hit 20 or 30 balls. Try to make a smooth swing that is the same every time. You should find that, providing you make good contact, the distance the ball travels is always within a 5-10 yard range. Work out the average distance of these shots, and you now have your distance for that club.

Typically, you can add or subtract 10-15 yards for each club longer or shorter. I.e. if you hit an 8 iron 150 yards, your 7 iron should go 160 – 165 yards. As you practice more, you can hone these distances and get to know your exact distance for each club.

With this new insight into your game, you’ll be able to choose the right club every time you set up for an approach shot. Just remember – keep a consistent swing speed, and learn your distances! So when you aim, you can focus on striking the ball well, rather than on how hard you need to swing. Trust your swing, and let the club do the work! If you can get to this stage, you should we well on your way to consistently hitting greens in regulation, and you should also find that you will start striking the ball a lot more consistently.

To hone your game even more though, you will have to start getting exact distances while you’re on the course. There are a couple of things you can do to achieve this – GPS devices are one way, and Laser Range finders are another. You can also use course markings, although there will be a level of guess work involved if you’re not right on the mark. Any of these methods work, just make sure you do find out the exact distance to the pin before you choose your club and take the shot – don’t guess!

Of course, there are some other things to consider when choosing a club – wind conditions, what ball you are using and whether the pin is higher or lower than the ground you are standing on are all important factors. You’ll learn to judge these in time, but the basic rules are that the ball will travel further with a tail wind or if the pin is low, and the reverse for a high pin or headwind.

Start putting these tips into your game and I assure you, you’ll have the distance control you’ve always wanted in no time and your friends will be wondering how you’re managing to hit those greens so consistently!
