Kick Starting Your Spring Golf Season
1) Start with a one-on-one lesson with video analysis.
2) Make sure the lesson starts with a look at your address position.
3) Once you review your video, make a list of priorities.
4) Learn specific drills that relate directly to your problem.
5) Perform the drills at your home or office as often as possible.
6) Before you play golf, perform the drills on the range
7) Make sure you forget everything you learned once you head for the golf course
Please allow me to elaborate further.
1) Start out with a one-on-one lesson that includes video analysis.
Of course, this will sound biased since I’m in the lesson business. However, it is still helpful and accurate information. One-on-one lessons combined with video analysis will save you hours of aggravation, not to mention precious time in an all-too-short season.
You need to see the possible swing faults or bad habits you may need to correct immediately, before you start playing again.
2) Make sure the lesson starts with a look at your address position.
There is no use working on your golf swing if you are addressing the ball improperly. Make sure you have a specific target at which you’re aiming. Check the ball position. Check your grip, arm position, body position, spine angle and your general manner of approach and set up to the golf ball.
It is well publicized that Jack Nicklaus would go to his swing guru (Jack Grout) every new season. Jack would literally start from the beginning, working on the basic fundamentals I just mentioned. The address position is something over which you have total control. If you set up to an improper position, you will need compensations in your swing to balance out the improper address, (see my Special Report on “Alignment and Set Up” on our web site at www.bobbylopezgolf.com).
3) Once you review your video, make a list of priorities.
Don’t fall into the trap of trying to fix all your swing faults in one day. You and your golf professional need to discuss the list of problems you encountered with your golf swing. Together, you can decide which problem is causing you the most harm.
In many cases, fixing one problem also fixes other
related concerns. I would never choose more than two swing faults to work on at one time.
4) Learn specific drills that relate directly to your problem.
Make sure you understand what drill is being assigned to you. You should perform the drill on video so you have a visual key. For tips on how to perform a drill properly, see my report at www.bobbylopezgolf.com, (How To Perform Drills To Perfection).
5) Perform the drills at your home or office as often as possible.
Take a five-minute break and apply your medication (swing drills) for your nagging swing fault. The number of repetitions is key when performing a drill.
If you’re a once-a-week golfer, you’re out of luck if you don’t do your drills for 5, 10 or 15 minutes every chance you get. If you are able to have a golf club in your office at work, all the better.
6) Before you play golf, perform the drills on the range
When you arrive at the golf course, make sure you have budgeted enough time to warm up on the practice range. The first thing you should do is perform your specific drills. Remind your brain and body what you want to accomplish. Then warm up by hitting your golf balls. Check out my report on “How to Take Your Golf Swing from the Practice Range to the Golf Course”, on my web site at www.bobbylopezgolf.com.
7) Make sure you forget everything you learned once you head for the golf course
The medication your golf professional prescribed for you is to be taken at your home, office or practice range. Once on the golf course, let the work you’ve done in those environments take over through repetition and your subconscious. If you do hit a shot poorly that relates directly to what you’re working on, quietly do a few drills alongside your golf cart without disturbing the other players. Then forget it, go play and enjoy yourself.
Thinking too much about your swing fault on the golf course as ruined many a golfer. Be aware of your tendencies and the anti-dote you need to keep it under control, but don’t focus your entire round of golf on swing mechanics.
